Six "terrorists and hired killers" have been arrested in Venezuela accused of trying to assassinate President Nicolas Maduro in an alleged drone attack, the government said.
Seven people were injured and several people were later arrested in the apparent attack, which came as Maduro celebrated the National Guard's 81st anniversary on August 4th, said Information Minister Jorge Rodriguez.
"At exactly 17h41 several explosions were heard," Rodriguez said in a live address to the nation, minutes after the incident. "The investigation clearly reveals they came from drone-like devices that carried explosives", he added.
“This was an assassination attempt, they tried to assassinate me,” President Maduro said in a televised address. “That drone was coming for me but there was a shield of love. I am sure I will live for many more years.”
Maduro said the investigation into the incident started immediately and that some of those involved in the attack had been captured and charged, although he did not specify the charges against them./.
