Slovak Foreign Minister elected as UN General Assembly President

The UN General Assembly has elected Slovak Foreign Minister Miroslav Lajcak to be its next President.

Mr. Lajcak, 54, was elected by acclamation as President of the 72nd session of the UN General Assembly at a special session. The 72nd session of the UN General Assembly will commence from September 12th.

The 193-member assembly, the UN's most representative body, burst into applause when current President Peter Thomson of Fiji announced that Lajcak had been elected by acclamation to lead its 72nd session beginning in September.

Lajcak, who was one of the candidates last year for the position of UN Secretary General, will succeed Fijian diplomat Peter Thomson.

Addressing the sesion, Mr. Miroslav Lajcak set out a series of priorities, including "preventive diplomacy," responding to the global migrant crisis, defending human rights and reducing inequality.

"We can do more to bring the UN closer to the world's citizens," he said./.
