An earthquake measuring 6.5 on the Richter scale struck nearly 250 km north-northwest of Botswana's capital Gaborone on April 4th.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) said the quake struck at a depth of 29 kilometres, and rumbled throughout the capital for about 30 seconds.

The quake struck shortly before 8 p.m (local time) near Moijabana in the rural east-central Ghanzi region of the country. As yet, there are no confirmed reports of fatalities, injuries or damage, the government said in its social media messages.

It was the largest earthquake ever recorded in Botswana, news media in Gaborone said.

The quake was also felt in several cities in South Africa, as well as in Swaziland and Zimbabwe, several hundreds of kilometres from the epicentre, witnesses said./.
