The Russian Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Supervision (FSVPS) have recently added two more seafood enterprises to the list of Vietnamese firms permitted to export to the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), as of May 4, reported VOV News.

In the updated list, the two eligible enterprises include Hung Ca Co., Ltd (DL 126) and Vinh Hoan Joint Stock Company (DL 500).

One of the key export items to the EAEU market are frozen pangasius fillet that are produced in seafood facilities coded DL 126 and DL 500.

In line with this, the Centers for the Agro-Forestry-Fisheries Quality Assurance in Vietnamese localities have been assigned to grant certificates of quarantine for products coded DL 126, DL 500.

Furthermore, local businesses have been advised to ensure they follow all regulations on food safety in terms of processing and exporting seafood products to the demanding market.

According to statistics compiled by the General Department of Vietnam Customs, despite global trade fluctuations and the negative impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, trade turnover between the nation and EAEU during the 11-month period last year surged by 13.1% to reach US$12.7 billion.

Moreover, Vietnam and countries that make up the EAEU have also established solid co-operation frameworks, including the signing of the Vietnam-EAEU Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA).

These FTAs provide the basis for greater future co-operation in the fields of economics, trade, and investment between Vietnamese and EAEU enterprises.

In order to utilise incentives from these FTAs, local firms have been advised to actively survey the market, participate in trade fairs and exhibitions, as well as effectively selecting the proper form of transport to export to the fastidious market amid escalating logistical costs.

Vietnam should shift economic growth model for further development: WB report

For Vietnam to realise its aspiration for reaching high income status by 2045, the country will need to shift its economic growth model and sharply improve the government’s capacity to coordinate and implement economic policy reforms and public investments, a World Bank Group report says.

According to Vietnam News Agency, the World Bank Group’s Systematic Country Diagnostic Update, entitled "How Will Vietnam Blossom? Reforming Institutions for Effective Implementation”, emphasises that Vietnam's traditional growth model faces major challenges from the COVID-19 pandemic, slowing globalisation, and the country’s increasing vulnerability to external shocks, especially climate risks.

After identifying a series of policy responses and reform priorities, many of which are not new, the report argues that adapting institutions will be the key to success.

Vietnam’s GDP per capita has increased five fold over the past three decades, while its institutions have not adapted at the same speed since the Doi Moi (Renewal) of the late 1980s,” said World Bank Country Director for Vietnam Carolyn Turk.

“A series of institutional reforms can help the country avoid the middle-income trap by increasing its efficiency to respond to new and complex global and domestic challenges,” stated Turk.

Vietnam has implemented its development priorities unevenly over the past 35 years. It has exceeded expectations in trade openness and social inclusion but lagged considerably in promoting green growth and upgrading national core infrastructure. Such variability is explained by its institutions that have not been always well prepared to address increasingly complex, often cross-cutting development priorities, or to facilitate the transition to a higher-income society. Adapting and modernising existing institutions is a key priority of the socio-economic development strategy adopted by the Party Congress in February 2021.

Improving Vietnam’s implementation performance will require five institutional reforms, the report says. Vietnam will need to create a solid institutional anchor that will transform development priorities into concrete actions; streamline administrative processes to increase the effectiveness of government at all levels; use market-based instruments to motivate public and private stakeholders; enforce rules and regulations to enhance motivation, trust, and fairness; and engage in participatory processes to secure greater transparency and accountability.

Vietnam has already transformed itself from one of the most closed economies in the world to one of the most open economies during the 1990s and 2000s. But the road from lower middle income to high income will be far more challenging. By adopting these institutional reforms more systematically, Vietnam will underpin its vision for economic development, strengthen its capacity to implement national strategies, and boost its motivation to produce results in several key areas – green growth, digital transformation, financial inclusion, social protection and infrastructure upgrading – that will help it achieve its development goals.

The men’s and women’s sepak takraw teams of Thailand attending the ongoing SEA Games 31, comprising of over 30 members, toured Hanoi capital with double-decker bus on May 18, reported Vietnam News Agency.

Thailand had won gold medals in the men’s and women’s team regu events at the ongoing regional sporting event, while the hosts Vietnam earned a bronze in the men’s team regu and a silver in the women’s category.

The bus took the Thai delegation to famous tourist destinations in Hanoi such as the Hanoi Opera House, Ba Dinh Square, and Thang Long Imperial Citadel.

During the ‘Hanoi City Tour’, the delegation enjoyed a 30-minute sightseeing at the Temple of Literature special national relic.

Head coach of the men’s sepak takraw team Veeras Na Nongkhai said this is the first time that he has travelled to Hanoi, hailing the city’s landscapes and people’s cordiality.

Head of the sepak takraw delegation of Thailand Pairoj Archarungroj said this is the first time for him and many Thai athletes to experience the double-decker bus tour as Bangkok has yet to launch such services.

He also praised Vietnamese and Hanoi cuisine, adding that he wants to travel to the country with his family in the future.

Competitions of the sepak takraw at SEA Games 31 are being held at Hoang Mai Gymnasium in the district of the same name in Hanoi from May 11 to 21.

The ongoing ‘Hanoi City Tour’, free of charge for all delegates, including athletes, coaches and foreign reporters of SEA Games 31 throughout May, is among tourism products of the capital city serving the biennial regional sporting event.

It is arranged by the Hanoi Transport Corporation. The buses, running between 9am and 5pm every day, can be identified with the Games’ logo and the line ‘Official bus tour for SEA Games 31’.

The service is the first of its kind in the capital. The buses carry passengers through 25 streets and have 15 stops at key local tourist destinations such as the Hanoi Opera House, St. Joseph's Cathedral, Hanoi Flag Tower, President Ho Chi Minh’s Mausoleum, Hoa Lo Prison, and the Vietnamese Women’s Museum.

The vehicles are also equipped audio guides in 10 languages and operate every hour.

Travel companies in Hanoi have organised 28 tours for coaches, athletes and guests to the Games, according to the municipal Department of Tourism.

The tours have been arranged to fit in with the guests’ schedules, and focus on the cultural, historical and architectural values of Hanoi, along with scenic spots and ancient villages on the city’s outskirts.

Tourism companies are also offering trips to Ninh Binh, Sa Pa and Mai Chau, and Vietravel Tourism Company is selling tickets to the opening and closing ceremonies of the Games.

SEA Games 31, themed “For a Stronger South East Asia”, is being held in Hanoi and 11 neighbouring provinces and cities until May 23.

It features 40 sports with 523 events, attracting around 10,000 participants. The biennial event was initially slated for late 2021 but delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The third tourism forum between Saint Petersburg and Vietnam took place in the Russian city on May 17, in both online form and face-to-face, as part of activities under the framework of "Vietnamese days in Saint Petersburg", reported Nhan Dan News.

The forum attracted a large number of representatives from the tourism industry of Vietnam and Russia. Besides, with the desire to innovate tourism products for Russian tourists, representatives of Lao's Ministry of Information, Culture, and Tourism were also invited to the event.

Speaking at the forum, representative of the Embassy of Vietnam in Russia, Vietnam's Trade Counsellor in this country Duong Hoang Minh, said that despite their great efforts, Vietnam and Russia have not yet taken advantage of the potential to develop and attract tourists from Vietnam to Russia. He suggested the Russian government consider exempting visas for Vietnamese tourists for 15 days, in the context that Russia has exempted visas for visitors from Laos and Thailand for 30 days.

Deputy Director General of the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT) Nguyen Le Phuc said that Vietnam has simplified many procedures to attract tourists to Vietnam, including Russian tourists, such as visa exemption for different periods, and the gradual simplification or removal of quarantine measures.

Nguyen Le Phuc said that organising the event showed the two sides’ determination to promote tourism after the pandemic, expressing his belief that the number of tourists to each country will increase in the coming time.

At this 3rd forum, once again both Russia and Vietnam emphasized the need and desire for a direct flight from Vietnam to the northern ancient capital of Russia, meeting the needs of Vietnamese tourists. For which the city of Saint Petersburg is a particularly cherished destination.

The representative from the Lao's Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism affirmed his desire to develop tours from Russia to Vietnam and Laos./.
