Vietnam becomes second largest wooden furniture supplier to Australia

The country made up the second largest supplier of wooden furniture to Australia during the first half of the year, with export turnover reaching USD103.1 million in the reviewed period, representing a year-on-year rise of 72.1%, reported the Voice of Vietnam according to the Ministry of Industry and Trade.

Statistics compiled by the International Trade Center (ITC) indicated that Australia’s import value of wooden furniture in June reached USD138.64 million, marking a rise of 9.7% compared to June of last year.

During the opening half of the year, Australia’s import value of wooden furniture enjoyed an annual surge of 47.7% to USD871.54 million.

The import proportion from the Vietnamese market accounted for 11.8% of Australia’s total import value of wooden furniture throughout the reviewed period, climbing by 1.7 percentage points compared to the same period from last year. This figure shows that there is plenty of room for the export of the product in the near future.

Australia also increased its import of wooden furniture during the six-month period, with wood-framed chairs taking the lead with turnover of USD358.14 million, an increase of 66.3% against the same period last year.

Furthermore, the import revenue of living room and dining room furniture soared by 46.5% on-year to reach USD280.7 million, accounting for 32.2% of the country’s total import value of wooden furniture.

Most notably, Australia mainly imports the product from China, Vietnam, Indonesia, and India.

Vietnamese swimmers begin journey at 2020 Tokyo Paralympics

In the morning, Nhu is set to compete at the qualification of the women’s 50m freestyle S6. The top eight in the qualification will advance to the final held in the afternoon.

The female swimmer attended the 2012 and 2016 Paralympics.

Meanwhile, Tung will represent Vietnam at the men’s 200m freestyle S5.

He won a silver medal at the 2016 Rio Paralympics and three golds together with two silvers at the 2018 Asian Para Games in Indonesia.

Five years ago, Vietnamese athletes with disabilities made their mark at the 15th Paralympics when they won one gold, one silver and two bronze medals.

The Tokyo Paralympics is to be held from August 24 to September 5 with the participation of 4,400 athletes from 160 countries and territories around the world.

Vietnam Airlines transports citizens and medical equipment from US

A flight by national flag carrier Vietnam Airlines landed at Noi Bai International Airport on August 25 after departing San Francisco, with 277 Vietnamese citizens and 6.2 tonnes of medical equipment onboard, reported the Voice of Vietnam.

The shipment, worth a total of USD1 million, represents a meaningful gift that Vietnamese citizens based in the US have presented to help the country in its ongoing fight against COVID-19.

The donation includes 250 respirators, five ventilators, 9,000 COVID-19 rapid test kits, 600 sets of medical protective suits, 2,500 face shields, and 60,000 medical masks.

This marks the second direct flight between the nation and the US launched by Vietnam Airlines this year. This comes after the carrier received permission from US authorities to conduct 12 repatriation flights this year./.
