The lists cover several sub-sectors, such as international forwarding, warehouse services, and third- and fourth-party logistics; freight transport; port operations; and rapid delivery and last-mile delivery.

The top 10 businesses in international forwarding, warehouse services, and third- and fourth-party logistics are the Gemadept JSC, the Indo Tran Logistics Corporation, the DHL Global Forwarding (Vietnam) Corporation, the Transimex JSC, the Expeditors Vietnam Co. Ltd, the Schenker Vietnam Co. Ltd, the Kuehne Nagel Co. Ltd, the Bee Logistics JSC, the South Logistics JSC, and the Vinafreight JSC.

The rankings were compiled based on companies’ financial capacity, as reflected in their financial reports; media reputation, as assessed by media coding methods that encode articles about companies on influential media channels; and interviews with relevant parties conducted in October and November.

Vietnam Report General Director Vu Dang Vinh said that after decades of globalisation, the world is now more inter-connected than ever, opening up huge opportunities for global trade and promoting the development of supply chains.

However, he also noted that greater connectivity poses problems in supply chains in general and the logistics sector, the backbone of supply chains, in particular, when sudden shocks like COVID-19 strike.

The Vietnam Logistics Business Association reported that, in March, 15 percent of logistics companies posted a year-on-year revenue decline of 50 percent, and over half of all companies experienced a decline of 10-30 percent in the number of domestic and international logistics services provided compared to the same period last year.

The containment of COVID-19 helped Vietnamese businesses, including logistics companies, resume activities fairly quickly. A Vietnam Report survey shows that the operational capacity of 87 percent of interviewed companies in October and November was equivalent to 60 percent of pre-pandemic levels.

The Dak Nong Geopark is the latest member of the global network and the third to obtain this title in Vietnam.

It covers more than 4,700 sq.km. of land in six of the eight district-level localities in Dak Nong, namely Krong No, Cu Jut, Dak Mil, Dak Song, Dak G’Long, and Gia Nghia, equivalent to two-fifths of the province’s total area.

According to domestic and foreign scientists, there are 65 heritage and geomorphological sites in the Dak Nong Geopark, including volcanic craters, volcanic caves, and waterfalls.

Notably, this geopark is home to the largest system of volcanic caves in Southeast Asia, with more than 50 caves and a total length of over 10,000m.

Once coming to the Dak Nong Geopark, visitors can also explore the Central Highlands’ space of gong culture – a UNESCO-recognised masterpiece of the intangible heritage of humanity, the culture of M’Nong people – the ethnic group that has the longest residence history in the province, along with the culture of other ethnic minorities.

UNESCO Representative in Vietnam Michael Croft said the Dak Nong Geopark boasts the combination of natural beauty and locals’ unique culture, both of which need to be preserved and capitalised on via economic and tourism activities.

He highlighted the importance of local residents’ participation and pledged UNESCO’s close cooperation to help tap into tourism potential of this geopark.

On July 7, the Programme and External Relations Commission of the 209th UNESCO Executive Board approved the Global Geoparks Council’s proposal to recognise the Dak Nong Geopark as a global geopark,

Earlier, the Dong Van Karst Plateau in Ha Giang province and the Non Nuoc Cao Bang Geopark in Cao Bang province, both in the north of Vietnam, had been named members of the Global Geoparks Network.

Vietnam remains world’s largest producer, exporter of cashew nuts

Vietnam has maintained its position as the world’s largest producer and exporter of cashew nuts in 2020, exporting an estimated 450,000 tonnes of cashew kernels worth 3.2 billion USD, the VNA qouted the information from the Vietnam Cashew Association (Vinacas).

This year, Vietnam also remains the world’s biggest importer of raw cashew nuts, purchasing about 1.3 million tonnes from overseas.

Data by Vinacas shows that Vietnam began to ship cashew kernels abroad in 1990 after the association was founded. The country exported 286 tonnes of cashew kernels for 1.4 million USD that year. In 2004, the volume increased to 105,000 tonnes, worth approximately 436 million USD.

In 2006, Vietnam surpassed India for the first time as the world’s top exporter of cashew kernels, with an export volume of 127,000 tonnes worth 504 million USD.

Since 2017, Vietnam has retained its position as the world’s biggest hub for cashew processing and the largest exporter and importer of the product, accounting for over 50 percent of the global processed cashew nuts.

The industry has been hit by COVID-19 since the beginning of this year. Though cashew kernel exports reached more than 422,000 tonnes in the first 10 months of 2020, a year-on-year increase of 12 percent, the 10-month revenue dropped 3 percent to over 2.6 billion USD.

Although holding the title of “the world’s No 1 exporter”, Vietnam has still mainly exported semi-processed cashew nuts, which are sold at an average price of 10 USD per kilogramme, while finished products sold at supermarkets globally cost about 30 USD per kilogramme.

Vinacas Vice Chairman Nguyen Minh Hoa said the sector has been under enormous pressure from new policies of major suppliers and importers. African countries, which have been key suppliers of raw cashew nuts to Vietnam for years, are boosting the development of their domestic cashew processing industry, he said.

India, one of the world’s largest cashew nut consumption markets, is applying a tax policy to limit the amount of imported cashew nuts, mainly from Vietnam, he continued, adding that other key buyers such as the US and EU are also setting out additional food safety standards on cashew kernels from Vietnam.

Vinacas Chairman Pham Van Cong said these provide Vietnam with not only challenges but also opportunities which would encourage domestic manufacturers to restructure, upgrade technology and improve management capacity to climb up the global supply chain of cashew nuts.

It is important to develop a proper strategy for the cashew sector that facilitates shift from preliminary processing to production of final products sold in supermarkets, he said.

Cong further noted that Vinacas is formulating a strategy for the development of Vietnam’s cashew industry in the new context, to be proposed to the government in the near future./.
