The export items are quite diverse, ranging from agricultural products to processing and manufacturing items.

The items that raked in US$1 billion include garments and textiles at roughly US$1.67 billion, machinery, equipment, tools and spare parts with US$1.364 billion, along with means of transport and spare parts with US$1.2 billion, according to the Voice of Vietnam.

Last year, bilateral trade between the two sides reached approximately US$43 billion, of which exports stood at US$20.13 billion and imports at US$22.8 billion.

Currently, the scale of import-export turnover between Vietnam and Japan ranks fourth, behind China, the United States, and the Republic of Korea (RoK).

Vinfast to open US showrooms next week

Vietnamese car manufacturer VinFast plans to open its six showrooms in Berkeley, Commerce, Corte Madera, San Diego, San Mateo, and Santa Monica in the United States next week.

According to the media outlet, the Vietnamese automaker, which is just five years old and new to the EV market, also plans to break ground on an EV factory in North Carolina and deliver its first vehicles before the end of the year.

With its US headquarters established last year in Los Angeles, VinFast has been holding a series of events around California featuring the two-row VF 8 crossover which is now in development, reported the Voice of Vietnam.

“The automaker, which is expanding to North America and Europe after selling gasoline vehicles in its home market, delivered its first EVs in Vietnam at the end of last year. That model was smaller than the midsize VF 8 and three-row VF 9 that will launch in the US and Canada,” said Automotive News.

The publication noted that VinFast also plans to undertake an unusual sales model which separates the vehicle purchase from the EV battery. At launch, buyers will be able to choose from two battery-lease plans at an extra cost.

Prices start at US$40,700 for the base VF 8 and US$48,000 for the top trim, not including shipping. In addition, the VF 9 starts at US$55,500 for the base and US$61,000 for the top trim, with these prices subject to change, according to VinFast's US website.

“For drivers who don't rack up a lot of miles, VinFast is offering a flexible plan with a monthly battery subscription of US$35 for the VF 8 and US$44 for the VF 9. The price includes 310 miles of use,” wrote the media outlet.

For unlimited miles, the battery lease will cost US$110 a month for the VF 8 and US$160 a month for the VF 9.

As part of efforts to encourage orders this year, VinFast will freeze the monthly cost of the unlimited plan over the vehicle's lifetime.

UK exports to Vietnam grow over 23% after UKVFTA

A year after the UK-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (UKVFTA) came into effect in early 2021, trade between the two countries has shown significant growth despite the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, said an official of the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT).

Accordingly, trade between Vietnam and the UK reached 6.6 billion USD in 2021, an increase of 17% on the year and equivalent to the pre-pandemic period.

While Vietnamese export to the UK rose 16.4% year-on-year to 5.7 billion USD, UK’s export to Vietnam also witnessed a gain of 23.6% to nearly 850 million USD.

In 2021, products imported from the UK with the highest growth rate respectively were common metals (426%), phones and components (219%), textile, garment and footwear materials (24.7%), pharmaceuticals (35.4%), and cars (28%), according to data from the General Department of Vietnam Customs.

According to the Vietnam News Agency, Vietnamese products with a sharp growth in shipments to the UK market were fruits and vegetables (67%), coffee (17%), pepper (49%), iron and steel (1,269%), and toys and sports equipment (19%).

“The results showed that the UKVFTA is like a two-way high-speed train, helping us to boost exports to the UK and vice versa, the UK also increases exports to Vietnam”, Ngo Chung Khanh, deputy head of Multilateral Trade Policy Department, at a webinar on “Promoting the strengths of businesses - Utilising opportunities from the UKVFTA.”

This helped equalise the trade balance between the two countries, he added.

Data from the General Department of Vietnam Customs showed that in the first half of 2022, the country exported 2.9 billion USD of commodities to the UK while importing more than 372.5 million USD.

This shows the activeness and initiative of enterprises in exploiting new opportunities from the agreement./.
