Giant container vessel docks at Cai Mep Port

Denmark’s giant container vessel Margrethe Maersk arrived at Cai Mep International Port in the southern province of Ba Ria – Vung Tau on February 20th.

The vessel has a capacity of 194,000 tons and can carry 18,300 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit). Part of the world biggest container ship family, it was built in 2015, is 399 meters long and 59 meters wide.

Deputy Minister of Transport Nguyen Van Cong said the arrival of Margrethe Maersk marked an important milestone and break-through step in Vietnam’s seaport field, making Cai Mep one of just 19 terminals in the world with the demonstrated ability to receive such a giant vessel, and putting the port on the world’s shipping map.

In 2016, volume of goods carried through the Cai Mep – Thi Vai Port Complex reached nearly 3.5 million TEU with 2,493 vessels docking at the port./.
