Southern city targets 5% growth in industrial production

In 2021, the Ho Chi Minh city Industry and Trade sector strives to achieve the specific and basic targets, including 5% growth in industrial production, with its four key industries (food processing, pharmaceutical chemicals-rubber-plastic, mechanical engineering, and electronics) growing by at least 6.7%.

The Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee set targets and approved operational orientations and solutions for this year for its industrial and trade sectors at a recent meeting.

Mr. Bui Ta Hoang Vu, director of the city Department of Industry and Trade, said that the targets for growth in retail sales of goods and services and exports are 10%.

Aiming to achieve the targets, the Department of Industry and Trade will synchronously carry out solutions to contribute to realizing the overall goal of industrial and commercial development with a fair growth rate. It will also build and implement some solutions to develop the industry and trade sector to anticipate the development trend, helping the city maintain its leading economic role and be a pioneer in national innovation.

It will also focus on developing the industry and trade sector in association with the regional economy, applying science-technology, innovation and developing in depth in three foundations; including developing four key industries (mechanical, electronics, pharmaceutical chemistry - rubber - plastic, and food processing - beverages), supporting industries, key industrial product groups and potential industrial products; developing e-commerce; and developing a number of advantageous products of the city into key export products in the near future.

Ms. Phan Thi Thang, Deputy Chairwoman of the city People’s Committee, hailed the achievements of the industrial sector in 2020, saying it had greatly contributed to the city’s achievement of its dual goals of fighting the COVID-19 pandemic but also sustaining socio-economic growth.

She urged the department to speedily achieve administrative reforms and implement two promotion programs that would attract local and foreign tourists and make HCM City a major shopping centre in the country./.
