The market share of Vietnamese seafood in Japan’s total imports increased from 6.6% in January 2020 to 7% in January 2021, making the country the fourth largest seafood supplier to Japan.

The Import and Export Department under Ministry of Industry and Trade quoted the statistics of the Japanese Customs Agency saying that this January, Japan's seafood imports reached 165,030 tons, worth JPY106.99 billion (equivalent to USD997.9 million), down 4.8% in volume and 16.9% in value compared to January 2020. In January 2021, Japan increased imports of tuna and fish eggs, while decreasing imports of shrimp, squid and octopus, compared to the same period in 2020.
In January 2021, China, Chile, Norway, Vietnam and Thailand were the largest seafood supply markets for Japan. In which, Vietnam is the fourth largest seafood supplier, with 11,400 tons worth JPY9.17 billion (equivalent to USD85.5 million), up 0.3% in volume, but down 14.1% in value from the same period in 2020.
Regarding shrimp alone, the General Statistics Office of Vietnam indicated that in January 2021, Japan was the second largest shrimp export market of Vietnam in value, but the largest market in terms of volume, reaching 4,900 tons, worth USD42.6 million, up 25.6% in volume and 22.7% in value over the same period in 2020./.
