NA approves Resolution on participation in UN peacekeeping operations

On the basis of the report of the Vietnam Peacekeeping Department (GGHB), the Head of the Ministry of Defense reported to the Prime Minister for a policy of implementation at the request of the United Nations and at the same time to supply the Government of the Republic of South Sudan a number of medical equipment and epidemic prevention materials that Vietnam can self-produce, contributing to strengthening diplomatic relations, creating conditions for the UN force under charge of the United Nations to perform their duties in the host country.

On the report by the Vietnam Department of Peacekeeping Operations (VDPO), the Head of the Ministry of National Defence reported to the Prime Minister for a policy of implementation at the request of the UN, and giving aid of a number of medical equipment and materials to South Sudan, contributing to strengthening diplomatic relations, and creating conditions for Vietnam’s UN peacekeeping force to perform their duties in the host country.

The information was confirmed at the meeting of Lieutenant General Phung Si Tan, Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People's Army, with VDPO leaders and the Ministry of National Defence’s relevant agencies.

At the meeting, Major General Hoang Kim Phung, VDPO Director, gave a report on the department’s important achievements over the past years, proposing some issues to increase the department’s capacity in carrying out the UN peacekeeping missions.

Meanwhile, representatives from the Ministry of National Defence’s agencies urged stricter collaboration, especially in preparing personnel work and equipment for the UN engineering team; the preparation of forces and training for Field Hospital No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4; and the construction of the VDPO.

Lieutenant General Phung Si Tan shared the difficulties and hardships that the forces participating in UN activities must overcome, especially in operating areas far from the country, with harsh climate, security uncertainties and diseases.

In the context of complicated developments of the COVID-19 pandemic, Vietnam’s 2nd Field Hospital joined the UNMISS, actively advised the mission to implement measures to prevent infection, develop response situations, and practice to handle possible situations. The working group at Central Africa also actively made masks available for free to the staff of the Mission Headquarters and some local people.

Regarding the tasks in the coming time, the Deputy Chief of the General Staff asked the VDPO to promote the spirit of initiative and creativity in implementing central political tasks amid the complex context of COVID-19, especially the management, command and operation of the forces in South Sudan and Central Africa.

He also requested thorough preparations for the send-off ceremony of the 2-level Field Hospital No. 3, welcome the 2-level Field Hospital No. 2 to return home, and establish the 2-level Field Hospital No. 4 for training its staff and replacing Hospital No. 3 in 2022./.
