Vietnam, Laos promote defence cooperation

General Ngo Xuan Lich, Politburo member and Minister of National Defence, has confirmed that Vietnam attaches importance to the great friendship, special solidarity and comprehensive cooperation with Laos, and that the Vietnamese Minister of National Defence is willing to share experience with and support Laos in COVID-19 prevention, contributing to reinforcing Lao defence’s capacity.

He made the statement during his phone talks with Lao counterpart, General Chansamone Chanyalath, on September 8. 

During the phone talks, General Chansamone Chanyalath sent his congratulations to the Vietnamese Ministry of National Defence on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the Vietnamese National Day. He highly appreciated the Vietnamese side’s organization of the phone talks, which he said showed the trust and prompt sharing of joint viewpoint during the complex development of the world situation and the profound influence caused by COVID-19.

Stressing that Laos attaches importance to the great friendship, special solidarity and comprehensive cooperation with Vietnam, General Chansamone Chanyalath expressed his thanks to the Vietnamese Ministry of National Defence and army to give assistance to the Lao army in diverse areas, including the prompt sharing of COVID-19 prevention experience and support of medical equipment. He also congratulated Vietnam for successfully organizing ASEAN military and defence meetings during its ASEAN 2020 Presidency during the complex COVID-19 situation. 

The two Generals expressed their happiness with the bilateral defence cooperation over the past years, contributing to maintaining defence and security stability and socio-economic development in each country, deserving of the role of an important pillar in the bilateral relationship. 

Regarding cooperation orientations in the upcoming time, the two sides agreed to well carry out the cooperation agreements between the two Parties’, States’ and Defence Ministries’ leaders; increase cooperation among border protection and management forces in preventing trans-national crime, smuggling, trading and transporting addictive substances; continue to promote border patrol activities, contributing to preventing COVID-19 in every country; strengthen cooperation in sharing military construction experience; and ensure political stability, social order and safety in each country.

In addition, the two sides expressed mutual support on multilateral defence cooperation forums within the framework of ASEAN. General Chansamone Chanyalath affirmed his continued support and close coordination with Vietnam in successfully assuming the role of ASEAN President, including the successful organization of upcoming activities such as ASEAN Defense Forces Command Meeting, the ASEAN Defence Ministers' Meeting (ADMM) and the ADMM Plus./.
