Vietnam, Qatar step up trade promotion activities

Vietnamese Deputy Foreign Minister Pham Quang Hieu on September 15 held phone talks with the Secretary General of the Qatar Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ahmad Hassen Al-Hammadi.

During the talks, Deputy Minister Pham Quang Hieu expressed his delight at the positive developments in the friendly cooperative relationship between the two countries over the past time.

In terms of politics, the two sides have exchanged delegations at all levels and actively supported each other at multilateral forums. Economically, despite many difficulties due to the COVID-19 pandemic, bilateral trade turnover still increased from USD313 million in 2019 to USD550 million in 2020.

Secretary General of the Qatar Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ahmad Hassen Al-Hammadi highly appreciated Vietnam's political, foreign and socio-economic achievements, affirming that Qatar always attaches importance to promoting multi-faceted cooperation with Vietnam.

Agreeing that there is still great potential for bilateral cooperation between Vietnam and Qatar, the two sides discussed and agreed on measures to strengthen and further improve the efficiency of cooperation between the two countries in the coming time, paying special attention to strengthening online exchange activities between leaders of ministries and branches.

They agreed to closely coordinate at international forums and organizations; and regularly and effectively maintain existing cooperation mechanisms, such as political consultation between the two Foreign Ministries.

The two sides also emphasized the need to coordinate in organizing online trade and investment promotion activities, providing information and connecting businesses of the two sides; and speeding up negotiations and signing of cooperation deals, even in the online form, in order to perfect the legal framework for bilateral cooperation.

Mentioning the need to strengthen cooperation in the fight against COVID-19, Deputy Minister Pham Quang Hieu suggested Qatar support Vietnam in accessing vaccines and medical equipment for the prevention and control of the pandemic.

In addition, the two sides exchanged views on a number of regional and international issues of mutual concern./.
