On the evening of July 25, HCM City Party Committee held a teleconference under the chair of Nguyen Van Nen, Politburo member cum Secretary of the municipal Party Committee, to discuss stricter measures against the outbreaks in the city.

Speaking at the conference, Secretary Nen said that the conference aimed to discuss measures for the thorough implementation of Directive 16 of the Prime Minister on the application of strict social distancing rules in the city within two weeks, as well as effectively implementing Directive No. 12 of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee.

According to Nen, participants at the conference focused on discussing the most basic thing, that is how to control the outbreaks in the city.

Chairman of the city People’s Committee Nguyen Thanh Phong said that all activities will be suspended, except for emergency medical care or anti-pandemic activities.

The decision was made as the COVID-19 pandemic in the southern metropolis continues to spiral due to lax observance of social distancing measures among a number of residents as well as insufficient monitoring of relevant forces, he said, noting that it is a must to enforce even stronger measures even though that might cause impacts on multiple aspects.

Phong called for support and cooperation from local residents to enhance the efficiency of the pandemic fight.

The city has gone through 55 days of social distancing at different levels, with social distancing measures under Directive No. 16 beginning from July 9.

HCM City reported over 60,000 cases of COVID-19 since the resurgence began in late April./.
