Ho Chi Minh City marks Cambodia’s Independence Day

Speaking at the event, Phung Cong Dung, Chairman of the Committee for Overseas Vietnamese Affairs of Ho Chi Minh City and Chairman of the Vietnam - Cambodia Friendship Association of the city, said that Cambodia’s Independence Day, November 9, 1953, has become an important milestone in building and defending the country of the Cambodian people. Under the reign of King Norodom Shihanouk, the succession of King Norodom Shihamoni and the dynamic leadership of the Royal Government, Cambodia has made many great achievements in many fields. People's lives are constantly improving. Foreign relations are expanded, while Cambodia's position and prestige is increasingly enhanced in the international arena.

According to Mr. Dung, in 2022, the Vietnam - Cambodia and Cambodia - Vietnam Friendship Year, the two countries have exchanged many high-level delegations, celebrated major holidays, and conducted foreign and people-to-people, trade and investment cooperation activities with positive results. In the first eight months of 2022, the two countries' bilateral turnover reached USD8 billion, up 19% over the same period last year. Vietnam currently has 188 valid projects with a total capital of USD2.8 billion, ranking first in ASEAN and among the top five largest investors in Cambodia.

He added that over the past time, the Vietnam - Cambodia Friendship Association in Ho Chi Minh City has successfully coordinated to organize many activities to celebrate major holidays in the relationship between Vietnam and Cambodia; effectively implemented exchange programs, sponsorships and scholarships for Cambodian students in the city; and provided free examination and medicine distribution for nearly 1,000 poor patients in Cambodia.

Together with the people of the whole country, the people of Ho Chi Minh City have continued to make efforts to contribute to the successful implementation of the direction and content of the Vietnam-Cambodia cooperation relationship, which the leaders of the two countries affirmed as "good neighbors, traditional friendship, comprehensive cooperation, long-term sustainability" in order to contribute to the cause of peace, stability, cooperation and development in the region and the world, Mr. Dung emphasized.

Mr. Sok Dareth, Cambodian Consul General to Ho Chi Minh City, thanked the City Union of Friendship Organizations for organizing an emotional celebration with profound meaning to the country and people of Cambodia; considering it a testament to the respect, high concern, strong support and solidarity between the City Union of Friendship Organizations and the Consulate General of Cambodia in an effort to further promote and strengthen the comprehensive cooperation between the two countries.

Sharing the ups and downs of the nation's history over the past 69 years, Mr. Sok Dareth affirmed that Cambodia's history of fighting for independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity was always associated with the strong solidarity between Cambodia and Vietnam. “With its pure international spirit, Vietnam sacrificed its blood, helped Cambodia escape the Pol Pot genocidal regime and supported the restoration and redevelopment of Cambodia after the war, and safeguarded peace and stability until today./.
