Vietnam and Poland maximize opportunities from EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement

(CPV) – Vietnamese Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son suggested Vietnam and Poland work together closely to maximize opportunities from the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA); and wished Poland to create favorable conditions for Vietnam's agricultural and aquatic products and seasonal tropical fruits to expand their presence in the Polish market.

At the invitation of Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son, Polish Minister of Foreign Affairs Zbigniew Rau paid an official visit to Vietnam from March 16-17. On March 16, the two Foreign Ministers held talks in Hanoi.

Minister Bui Thanh Son highly appreciated the visit, considering it an important milestone in promoting the development of the good traditional friendship and multifaceted cooperation between Vietnam and Poland.

He affirmed that Vietnam always attaches importance to and wishes to strengthen the multifaceted cooperation relationship with Poland, a traditional partner and friend of Vietnam in Central Eastern Europe. On this occasion, he once again thanked the Polish Government and people for donating nearly 1.4 million doses of vaccines and 8 tons of medical equipment worth about USD4 million for Vietnam to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic.

Polish Foreign Minister Zbigniew Rau expressed his impression of Vietnam's socio-economic development achievements in recent years; highly appreciated the increasingly important role and position of Vietnam in the region and in the world; and affirmed that Poland always attaches importance to and wishes to strengthen relations with Vietnam, Poland's leading partner in Southeast Asia.

Giving a comprehensive exchange on socio-economic situation of each country and cooperation relationship between the two countries, the two sides were pleased to see that, over the past 70 years, the traditional friendship and multifaceted cooperation between Vietnam and Poland have been constantly promoted by generations of leaders and peoples, for actively developing in many fields, especially in politics, diplomacy, economy and trade. They agreed that room remains huge to further strengthen their bilateral cooperation, as well as measures to boost collaboration in potential fields in the future.

They also agreed to promote the exchange of delegations, closely coordinate and support each other at multilateral and international forums, including the United Nations, Asia-Europe Meeting and ASEAN-EU. The two sides highly appreciated that Poland is currently Vietnam's biggest trading partner in Central Eastern Europe and that Vietnam is Poland's fourth largest trading partner in Asia. Over the past 2 years, despite being affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, economic and trade cooperation between the two countries has continued to maintain growth momentum, with the two-way trade turnover between the two countries reaching a record level of over USD2.5 billion in 2021 and 2022.

Minister Bui Thanh Son suggested the two sides work together closely to maximize opportunities from the EVFTA, expecting that Poland would create favorable conditions for Vietnam's agricultural and aquatic products and seasonal tropical fruits to expand their presence in the Polish market. He also encouraged Polish businesses to invest in fields where Vietnam has demand and Poland has strength such as pharmaceuticals, animal husbandry, food processing and mining. On this occasion, he suggested Poland soon ratify the EU-Vietnam Investment Protection Agreement (EVIPA) and prompt the European Commission (EC) to remove its yellow card warning against Vietnamese seafood exports.

A memorandum of understanding between the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam and the Polish Diplomatic Academy is signed. 

The Polish diplomat evaluated Vietnam as one of the highest potential markets of Poland in Southeast Asia and proposed that Vietnam create favorable conditions for Polish products such as beef, poultry and blueberries to enter the Vietnamese market. He also expressed his wish that the two sides promote cooperation in the fields of information technology, smart city, green technology and environmental protection.

The two Ministers also agreed to promote bilateral cooperation in the fields of education - training, agriculture, natural resources - environment, culture, tourism, relics restoration, health, information technology and communications, as well as labor.

On this occasion, Minister Bui Thanh Son thanked the Polish Government for creating favorable conditions for the Vietnamese community to integrate and live stably in Poland. Meanwhile, Minister Zbigniew Rau affirmed that the Vietnamese community is one of the most respected and admired expat communities in Poland for their diligence, hard work, and contribution to the local economy and society. At the same time, he affirmed that he will continue to support the Vietnamese community to promote its role in the most effective way as a bridge to develop the friendship and multifaceted cooperation between the two countries.

During the visit, the two sides signed a memorandum of understanding between the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam and the Polish Diplomatic Academy./.
