Vietnam, Laos deepen cooperative relationship

In order to contribute to further bringing the Vietnam-Laos cooperation into depth and becoming more effective in the coming time, the Foreign Ministers of the two countries agreed to coordinate with relevant agencies to carry out effective cooperation agreements; and constantly strengthen cooperation in the fields of defense, security, trade and investment.

On July 3, on the occasion of attending the 7th Mekong-Lancang Cooperation (MLC) Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Bagan, Myanmar, Vietnamese Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son met Lao Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Saleumxay Kommasith.

The two ministers expressed their delight at the recent achievements in the special cooperation relationship between Vietnam and Laos. Accordingly, the exchange of high-level delegations has continued to be maintained; security - defense cooperation has been enhanced; key cooperation projects have been promoted by the two sides; two-way trade turnover in the first 5 months of 2022 reached nearly USD691 million, up 19% over the same period in 2021.

After the launching ceremony of the Vietnam - Laos Year of Solidarity and Friendship 2022 co-chaired by the Prime Ministers of the two countries in Hanoi in January 2022, the ministries, departments and agencies of Vietnam and Laos have coordinated to organize many meaningful activities to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations (September 5, 1962 - September 5, 2022) and the 45th anniversary of the signing of the Vietnam - Laos Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation (July 18, 1977 - July 18, 2022).

In terms of cooperation between the two ministries of Foreign Affairs of Vietnam and Laos, the two ministers affirmed to continue to work together to effectively implement the cooperation agreement between the two sides for the period of 2021-2025, including the effective implementation of the action plan on diplomatic and economic cooperation for the period of 2020-2025, promoting exchanges, strategic studies and regular exchanges between key units of the two ministries.

The two Ministers also agreed to strengthen coordination and mutual support at international, regional and sub-regional forums, together with other member states to maintain solidarity and strengthen ASEAN's central role./.
