Vietnam, Qatar increase economic and aviation cooperation

Deputy Foreign Minister Pham Quang Hieu was on a visit to Qatar on July 4 – 5 where he co-chaired a political consultation at the foreign deputy ministerial level, the second of its kind, with Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Soltan bin Saad Al-Muraikhi.

This was the first visit between the leaders of the two Foreign Ministries since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

During the visit, Deputy Foreign Minister Pham Quang Hieu also paid a courtesy call to Qatari Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani and met with Saleh bin Majid Al-Khulaifi, Assistant Undersecretary for Commerce Affairs at the Qatari Ministry of Commerce and Industry; Mansoor bin Ebrahim Al-Mahmoud, CEO at Qatar Investment Authority; and Mohammed Bin Ahmed Twar Al Kuwari, First Vice Chairman of Qatar’s Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

At the meetings, the two sides informed each other about the development situation and socio-economic policies in each country, highly appreciating the organization of the 2nd political consultation at the foreign deputy ministerial level after the time of interruption due to COVID-19.

The two sides expressed their delight at the positive developments in the friendship and cooperation over the past time, especially in politics-diplomacy, economy and energy.

The two countries have regularly exchanged delegations at all levels before the COVID-19 pandemic. The bilateral trade turnover in 2021 reached USD400 million, while large Qatari corporations such as Qatar Airways and Qatar National Bank (QNB) are operating actively and effectively in Vietnam.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Qatar Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani affirmed the importance of a friendly and cooperative relationship with Vietnam, highly appreciated Vietnam's development achievements over the past time, and expressed his wish to visit Vietnam soon to further strengthen the effective and substantive economic cooperation between the two countries.

On that basis, the two sides discussed measures to further improve the effectiveness of cooperation in the coming time, such as jointly organizing the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries, enhancing exchanges of delegations.

The two sides will soon organize the 3rd Intergovernmental Committee to review and promote cooperation between the two countries; continue to coordinate and support each other in international forums; strengthen trade, investment and tourism promotion activities, creating favourable conditions for the import of each other's strong products.

The two sides affirmed to increase commercial flights between the two countries, coordinate to share information on investment opportunities and projects of mutual interest, and step up cooperation in the fields of energy security and food security.

Also on this occasion, the two sides exchanged views on a number of international and regional issues of mutual concern./.
