Overseas remittances to HCM city rise over 10% in first quarter

Overseas remittances to Ho Chi Minh city reached 1.45 billion USD in the first quarter of 2021, a 10% rise compared to the same period last year, reported the city Committee for Overseas Vietnamese Affairs.

In 2020, the southern city received 6.1 billion USD in remittances, up 12% over the previous year.

Ho Chi Minh city now has nearly 2 million expatriates living and working abroad. In order to offer opportunities for expatriates to transfer money to the homeland, the city has carried out more payment methods by technology.

According to data from the World Bank (WB), in 2020, remittances to Vietnam are estimated at about 15.7 billion USD, listed among the Top 10 countries receiving the most remittances in the world.

Generally in the past 5 years, remittances sent to Vietnam totaled 71 billion USD, an average growth of 6% a year, of which the figures in 2018 and 2019 reached 16 billion USD and 16.7 billion USD, respectively./.
