In Mafia, the Ambassador worked with Chairman of Mafia District Martin S. Ntemo, and many leaders of local businesses to learn about the socio-economic development situation of the locality, including the infrastructure and transport connections between the island and the mainland, with a focus on the development of the coconut industry, and exploitation and conservation of Mafia’s marine resources, thereby promoting opportunities for bilateral cooperation.

Mafia island district is 20km from the mainland, and was an important trading gateway between East Asia and East Africa many centuries ago.

Currently, Mafia is one of the 6 districts of Pwani province with an area of 407 km2 of land and 565 km2 of sea, and a population of over 53,000 people, mainly engaging in fishing, tourism and agriculture.

Coconut cultivation area accounts for 84% of the island's arable land.

Mafia has Mafia Island Marine Park (MIMP), which is Tanzania's first Marine Park with high marine biodiversity, thanks to the junction between the Rufiji estuary and the deep ocean. MIMP has 273 species of coral and 395 species of fish.

In addition to sea bath tourism, MIMP also has sea diving tours to see corals, fish, whales and sharks./.
