Ambassador Hoang Van Loi stated that while most countries suffered negative growth or fell into recession, Vietnam's economy still had a positive growth of 2.91% with an export turnover of 540 billion USD, with export surplus of 20 billion USD.

Besides, despite the complicated development of the pandemic, Vietnam's global innovation index in the past year was still ranked 42/131 countries, leading the group of 29 countries with the same income level. The year 2020 is also considered to be the period when the people's confidence index has improved dramatically, thanks to outstanding successes in socio-economic development, demonstrating the rising spirit and will of the whole nation amidst all difficulties and challenges.

In terms of foreign affairs, the ambassador said that Vietnam has made many important achievements in 2020, thereby affirming its international position, and helping it gain more confidence, strength and courage to continue proactively integrating into the international community deeply and effectively. One of the remarkable achievements is that Vietnam successfully assumed "dual responsibility", holding two roles at the same time as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council and as the ASEAN Chair.

In addition, Vietnam also made great efforts in the past year to promote international economic integration, with the adoption of the EU - Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) and the participation in the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP). The ambassador affirmed that the implementation of these important free trade agreements will create new dynamics for development, economic institutional reform, and enhancement of economic competitiveness.

He highly appreciated the continuous development of the Vietnamese community in South Africa in the context of many common difficulties in the host country, and expressed his wish that the Vietnamese community continue to preserve national identity, look towards the homeland and build a united and strong Vietnamese community, being a bridge to promote the traditional friendship between the two countries.

On behalf of the Vietnamese Community in South Africa, Ms. Ngo Thi Tuyet Trinh affirmed that the Vietnamese community in South Africa will enhance solidarity in the community, because it is the good tradition of the Vietnamese people.

At the event, the participants enjoyed traditional dishes on Lunar New Year Festival of Vietnam and an art program performed by overseas Vietnamese./.
