Vietnamese Embassy in Malaysia talks about East Sea situation

A talk about the regional situation, with the main content on the East Sea situation, was held at the headquarters of the Vietnamese Embassy in Malaysia on November 19th.

Speaking at the meeting, Vietnamese Ambassador to Malaysia Pham Cao Phong said that it was part of the periodical political program of the Embassy. Through the program, the Embassy wished to supply full and accurate information on the situation in the region, including the East Sea issue, to the overseas Vietnamese community in Malaysia.

At the meeting, Dr. Vu Hai Dang, First Secretary of the Vietnamese Embassy in Malaysia, presented some contents relating to East Sea issue, such as disputes between China and the Philippines on the East Sea, United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea in 1982 (UNCLOS 1982), the process of the Philippines suing China at the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA), the main content of the PCA ruling on the Philippines’ lawsuit, and Vietnam’s declaration relating to the dispute between the Philippines and China.

He clarified the issues that concern overseas Vietnamese people, such as the nature of the dispute between the Philippines and China on the East Sea, the origin of the claims of the so-called nine-dash line of China, and mechanisms to solve disputes under UNCLOS 1982.

Mr. Vu Hai Dang also answered questions of overseas Vietnamese about the legal status of islands in delimitation of territorial waters.

At the event, Ambassador Pham Cao Phong emphasized that after understanding the situation, the overseas Vietnamese community should join hands with the whole country in the struggle to defend the sovereignty of the nation, and take advantage of opportunities to exchange and explain to international friends so that they better understand the situation, to actively support Vietnam in the struggle to defend its sovereignty./.
