Ho Chi Minh city carries out sustainable poverty reduction solutions

Ho Chi Minh city, the most populous locality in the country, has accelerated poverty reduction solutions, thus eliminating poverty in accordance with the city’s poverty standard and striving to pull all poor families out of poverty in accordance with multidimensional standards by 2025.

According to the city Department of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs, from 2016 to 2020, the city mobilized over VND7 trillion, including nearly VND5.2 trillion for preferential loans and small credit, to realize poverty reduction programs. The capital created the best conditions for poor and nearly-poor families to boost economic development, create stable jobs and escape poverty.

Diverse poverty reduction programs have been carried out effectively, including giving vocational training to 20,000 labourers, creating jobs to 49,000 poor and nearly-poor people, providing 1 million medical insurance cards; building 2,300 houses, and giving educational fee exemption to 150,000 pupils.

Director of the city Department of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs Le Minh Tan said that in the upcoming time, the city will mobilize credit worth some VND4.5 trillion to support poor and nearly-poor families to develop their domestic economy.

Meanwhile, Deputy Chairman of the city People’s Committee Ngo Minh Chau informed that the city will increase the implementation of 7 poverty reduction programs, including giving educational fee exemption or reduction to pupils; giving medical support to poor and nearly-poor families; providing loans for housing; providing incineration; giving support to extremely disadvantaged poor families; giving household water fee reduction; and providing loans for ethnic minority people.

He added that families who recently escaped poverty will continue to be supported with social welfare policies for 24 months./.
