UNWTO said Asia and the Pacific welcomed 354.1 million international visitors in 2018, a year-on-year rise of 6.5%, accounting for a quarter of the total number of travelers around the globe.

Of this, Southeast Asia leads the region on international visitor growth with 7.9%. It was followed by followed by North-East Asia (6%) and South Asia (5%). Oceania showed more moderate growth at 3%.

Together with Vietnam, two other markets, Indonesia and Cambodia, also achieved growth in international travelers due to demand increase from the Chinese and Indian markets. Thailand, the Philippines and Singapore also made significant results.

After Southeast Asia, Northeast Asia ranked second with 6.1% growth, South Asia 5.2% and Oceania 2.8%.

Thailand continues to affirm its position by maintaining stable growth of about 2.7-2.9 million travelers a year within the past three years (2016, 2017, and 2018). Malaysia followed, but it showed signs of slowing down and did not record growth in the three years. Meanwhile, Vietnam has been gradually reducing the gap with Indonesia and Singapore.

Vietnam leads the ASEAN region in terms of international arrivals from markets such as the Republic of Korea and Taiwan (China). Indonesia and Singapore topped the number of tourists from Australia compared to other countries in the region./.
