With 2-3 digit export growth, doors to China are opening to Vietnamese pangasius and shrimp, especially when this market loosens anti-epidemic regulations.

According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), after a strong 3-digit increase of 125%-140% from March to May, shrimp exports to China in June increased by 32%, reaching nearly 58 million USD.

Shrimp exports to the market reached nearly 333 million USD in the first half of this year, up 84%. This market is considered to have good consumption demand from now until the end of the year.

In the first 6 months of 2022, export value of pangasius to China totalled 427.6 million USD, up 107% over the same period last year. Previously, China’s Zero Covid policy had made it difficult for importing seafood products during the first four months of this year, including the main suppliers such as Ecuador, India, Vietnam, Russia, Norway, Indonesia and the Philippines.

According to VASEP, the removal of Chinese regulations relating to suspending the import of frozen food contaminated with the SARS-CoV-2 virus is anticipated to accelerate Vietnamese frozen shrimp and pangasius exports to this market in the second half of the year.

Mr. Nguyen Nhu Tiep, Director of the National Agro-Forestry-Fisheries Quality Assurance Department (Nafiqad) under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development said that with the adjustment of the regulations, Vietnamese seafood exporters will meet less difficulty in exporting in the second half.

Accordingly, with shipments infected with COVID-19, enterprises will not be suspended from exporting as before, so export activities will not be affected. Chinese Customs will join Nafiqad to give online inspection to enterprises' production processes to monitor quality and food safety./.
