Laos-Vietnam: From alliance in struggle to special relationship

On July 27, major Lao newspapers published a number of articles about the Laos-Vietnam alliance in struggle, about the history of struggling against common enemies; of mutual support for the great friendship, special solidarity and comprehensive cooperation between the two countries.

Pathet Lao newspaper spotlights close-knit Vietnam-Laos ties

Pathet Lao, a printed publication of the Lao News Agency, published an article about the Laos-Vietnam alliance in struggle, asserting that during the period of struggle against French colonialist and US imperialist rule and aggression, the two countries joined forces to fight against a common enemy. Vietnamese volunteer soldiers stood shoulder to shoulder with the Lao armed forces, contributing to bringing the two countries' resistance wars against colonialism and imperialism to a glorious victory.

The article also quoted President Ho Chi Minh's words of appreciation for the special relationship and fighting solidarity between the Party, army and people of the two countries, as saying that helping the people of Laos meant helping Vietnam itself. President Kaysone Phomvihane also once assessed, “In the history of the world revolution, there have been many clear examples of the noble international spirit of the proletariat, but nowhere and never has there been special, long-term and comprehensive solidarity and alliance in struggle as between Vietnam - Laos."

With the international spirit of the proletariat and implementing the teachings of President Ho Chi Minh, Vietnamese volunteers and experts made great contributions, successfully completing their tasks together with the Lao army and people in gaining victory in two resistance wars against the French colonialists and the American imperialists (1945-1975).

The front page of Pasaxon newspaper, the organ of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party, featured the article "Laos - Vietnam walk together on the path of development" which hailed the Laos – Vietnam fighting alliance as a symbol of strong will and determination to fight for independence, freedom, peace and justice.

It emphasised that a number of Vietnamese voluntary soldiers and experts laid down their lives in Laos to bring peace and freedom to the two peoples.

Over the past 59 years since the two countries officially established diplomatic relations on September 5, 1962, the political relations as well as diplomatic relations have continuously achieved good results. Economic cooperation is an important component in the relationship between the two countries, as they share the same expectations and goals in building and developing a prosperous country, and improving the lives of the people of the two countries more and more.

Currently, Vietnam is one of the leading countries in investment and a major trading partner of Laos. Defense - security cooperation continues to achieve important results in many aspects. Culture, education, science and technology cooperation continue to achieve positive results. Meanwhile, Laos and Vietnam always coordinate and support each other in the implementation of action programs as well as issues discussed in ASEAN when Vietnam assumed the role of ASEAN Chair.

The Party, State and people of Vietnam always give valuable, timely and effective support and assistance to Laos every year, as well as during times when Laos is facing difficulties due to natural disasters and pandemic, especially in dealing with COVID-19. Recently, Vietnam was the first country to send experts and transfer medical supplies and equipment to support and help Laos, demonstrating the special nature of the Laos-Vietnam cooperation relationship.

In June, Thongloun Sisoulith, Lao Party General Secretary and State President, his wife and a high-ranking delegation of Laos paid an official friendship visit to Vietnam. This was the first foreign visit after Thongloun Sisoulith was elected Lao Party General Secretary and State President, showing his respect and desire to continue to strengthen the special, comprehensive cooperative relationship between the two countries. The visit once again affirms the great friendship, special solidarity and comprehensive cooperation between the two Parties, States and peoples of Laos and Vietnam as a model of international relations./.
