(CPV) - On 18 July 2022 the world will again honour the legacy of the first democratically elected President of South Africa, Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela. Born in 1918 in the Eastern Cape, Madiba - as he was affectionately known - was a humanist who was not only one of the foremost struggle heroes that fought for the freedom of all South Africans, but was also regarded by the international community as an inspiring leader committed to promoting freedom and respect for human rights, equality, unity and tolerance.

Nelson Mandela International Day was launched on 18 July 2009 following a unanimous decision of the United Nations General Assembly. It has been celebrated ever since to honour Madiba’s values and his dedication to the service of humanity.

The day not only celebrates Nelson Mandela's life and legacy but is also a global call to action for people to recognize their ability to have a positive effect on others around them.

The global theme for Nelson Mandela International Day 2022 is “Do what you can, with what you have, wherever you are”. The context is a world in which inequality continues to grow and in which the destructive impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has exposed existing disparities and damaged vulnerable communities in all kinds of ways. The call to action is as broad and as inclusive as possible - identify those in need around you and do what you can to make a difference for them.

As has now become customary, the South African Embassy in Hanoi will be joining the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion of Vietnam and the Meliá Hanoi Hotel in presenting a blood drive in support of Nelson Mandela International Day./.
