It is expected that there will be some additional 3 million doses in the third quarter of this year and some 27-28 million doses of Pfizer/BioNtech in the fourth quarter arriving in Vietnam, using the State budget.
Earlier, in May, the Ministry of Health negotiated and signed contracts with Pfizer/BioNtech to buy 31 million doses of this kind of vaccine, which was adopted for urgent use by the Ministry of Health, becoming the fourth kind of COVID-19 vaccine adopted in Vietnam.
So far, some 105 million doses from different sources are committed to be distributed to Vietnam. The Ministry of Health is negotiating for an additional 45 million doses to meet the target of having 150 million doses this year.
Vietnam has set a target for herd immunity in late 2021 or early 2022, with some 70% of the population vaccinated.
The Pfizer vaccine was adopted by the World Health Organization on January 1, becoming the first vaccine adopted for urgent use. According to the results of final tests announced on April 2, the Pfizer vaccine is 95.3% effective, and prevents serious COVID-19 infections. Research published in late June showed that the Pfizer vaccine can maintain an immune response against nCoV for many years. The vaccine is currently used in 103 countries./.
