The Lao Government has suspended the issuance of visas for foreign tourists for 30 days and closed schools at all levels to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith announced on March 18th.

All types of visas on arrival and electronic visas (E-visas) are suspended, he said after concluding the first day of the monthly cabinet meeting for March.

Those already holding an entry visa need to get a health certificate from the concerned authorities and declare their travel history.

The cabinet temporarily revokes visa exemptions previously applied to some countries. Therefore, those countries’ citizens need to come to the Lao embassy or consulate applying for visas, he stated, adding that this measure will go on until further notice.

The PM said Lao people travelling from coronavirus-hit countries are required to impose self-quarantine for 14 days. All entertainment venues including karaoke and massage venues must be closed.

Other businesses can continue operations and services with the operators employing necessary protective measures, including taking the temperature of customers and providing alcohol-based hand sanitizer.

All state and private educational facilities from preschools to universities will be closed from March 19th to April 21th.

As of March 18th, Laos had recorded no COVID-19 case./.
