Central Highlands province marks 55th year of AO calamity

A ceremony was held in the Central Highlands province of Kon Tum on August 8th to mark the 55th year of the Agent Orange calamity in Vietnam (August 10th).

Being the first locality sprayed with the toxic chemical by the US troop during the war in Vietnam, from 1961 to 1971, Kon Tum province had to bear some 346,000 litres of the toxic chemical.

There are some 8,000 people with suspected exposure to the toxic chemical, including 800 victims who are resistance war participants and over 250 victims who are war participants’ children. A majority of them are living with dangerous diseases.

To care for AO victims, over the past 6 years, agencies and individuals have contributed nearly VND4 billion to the provincial fund for AO victims, supporting the building and repairing of houses and giving presents to the victims.

During the ceremony, over 80 organizations and individuals donated VND1.4 billion to assist the lives of the victims.

Meanwhile, the provincial Fatherland Front encouraged organizations and individuals to continue their assistance towards the victims and support the struggle for justice for the victims launched by the Vietnam Association of Victims of Agent Orange./.
