The half lion-half mermaid figure is a well-known symbol of Singapore, known as the Merlion.
The Merlion statue has the head of a lion and the body of a fish.
The Merlion statue represents the legend of Singapore’s discovery.
The Merlion statue, measuring 8.6 meters high and weighing 70 tonnes, was built by
the late Singapore craftsman, Mr Lim Nang Seng
A smaller Merlion statue, called Merlion Cub measuring two meters high
and weighing three tonnes, was also built by Mr Lim.
The Merlion and the Merlion Cub are located at the mouth of the Singapore river,
opposite the Elizabeth Walk.
At present, the Merlion was moved to a newly built park on an area of 2.500m2
by One Fullerton.
The Merlion statue has been known as a symbol of Singapore since the early 1960s.
