Vovinam is a Vietnamese martial art. It was founded as Vovinam by grandmaster Nguyen Loc (1912-1960) in 1938, with the intent of providing practitioners with an efficient method of self-defence after a short period of study. It is practiced with and without weapons. The art is based on the principle of hard and soft interaction. It includes training of the body as well as the mind. It uses the force and reaction of the opponent. Vovinam includes hand, elbow, kick, escape and levering techniques. The discipline requires training in attack and defence techniques in addition to forms, combat and traditional wrestling. The wide range of techniques include punching, kicking etc. as well as forms, wrestling, sword, staff, axe, folding fan and others.

Self-defence techniques cover defence against unarmed attacks like choking from behind and defence against attacks with knife or sword. Advanced students learn to combine the techniques and to defend themselves against armed opponents. Instructors train traditional weaponry skills like the long stick, short stick, knife, sword and sabre. Thus, the weapons serve as training devices for reaching optimal control of body and mind.

Techniques and weapons: Hand techniques, elbow techniques, kicking techniques, knee techniques, forms, attack techniques, self-defence, self-defence against knife attack, traditional wrestling, leg attack take-downs, staff, sword, halberd and cutlass.
