Tro Chieng Festival in Yen Ninh commune, Yen Dinh district, Thanh Hoa province, has been officially listed as one of Vietnam’s national intangible cultural heritage.

Yen Dinh district received a certificate for the local festival’s new status from the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism at a ceremony on February 25th (the 10th day of the first lunar month), which is part of the festival.
The festival, imbued with royal cultural identities, was popularized and preserved in the countryside. It reflects the labouring life, struggle and dreams of people, association with the history against foreign invaders and name of General Trinh Quoc Bao, who made great contributions to the fight against foreign invaders and preservation of the homeland, creating and teaching Tro Chieng for local people.
With the above significance, Tro Chien has been repeatedly performed at great national festivals such as the celebration of 1,000 years of Thang Long -Hanoi, Lam Kinh Festival, the 100-year tourism festival of Sam Son, and Hai Tien beach tourism festival.
Currently, the villagers hold the festival on the 10th-12th of the lunar New Year. The festival is organized on a large scale with folk games and cultural activities, including a paper elephant fighting competition, in which groups of men hoisting paper elephants attempt to topple each other.
