US becomes Vietnam’s largest supplier of fruits, vegetables

According to the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, the US has become Vietnam’s largest supplier of fruits and vegetables in the first four months of the year, recording a 44 percent increase year-on-year in export value to 102.1 million USD.

Vietnam's overall fruit and vegetable imports fell 42 percent to 376.9 million USD, but imports from several countries such as New Zealand, the US and Korea increased, reported VNA.

In the same period last year the US had accounted for only 10 percent of imports.

Pham Thien Hoang, owner of GreenSpace Store, a fruit importer, said fruits from the US are very popular among Vietnamese consumers.

Apples, grapes and cherries are among the biggest imports from that country.

Vietnam is also a substantial exporter of vegetables and fruits, and in the first four months earned 1.2 billion USD these products, a 12.5 percent drop.

Promoting lychee exports in Singaporean market

According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade, an online conference to promote farm produce and food exports, with a particular focus being placed on the export of Bac Giang lychees to the Singaporean market will take place at the end of May.

It will be held by the Vietnam Trade Promotion Agency (VIETRADE) under the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the Vietnamese Embassy’s Trade Office in Singapore, and the Singapore Business Federation.

It will offer a fantastic opportunity for Bac Giang province, the largest concentrated fruit growing area throughout the north of the country, to promote the export of lychees and seek out Singaporean businesses that are keen to import the fruit.

Vietnam named best COVID-19 fighter globally by Politico

The US news website Politico has ranked Vietnam the best performer worldwide in the fight against COVID-19.

The ranking is based on the COVID-19 impacts on public health and economic outcomes.

Politico has mapped the performance of 30 leading countries by plotting their health and economic outcomes and grouping them based on whether they have instituted light, moderate or severe restrictions. Vietnam had recorded only approximately 300 cases out of a population of 95 million, without any deaths.

According to the National Steering Committee for COVID-19 Prevention and Control, Vietnam had no new COVID-19 cases to report on May 25th morning. This means that Vietnam goes through 39 straight days without COVID-19 community transmission.

The committee’s treatment subcommittee reported that 267 out of the total 325 patients have given all-clear from the disease, and with zero death. 185 cases were imported and quarantined upon arrival in Vietnam, so there is no risk of community transmission./.
