Veggie, fruit exports exceed 1.5 billion USD in first half

According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, exports of vegetable and fruits fetched more than 1.5 billion USD in the first six months of the year, a year-on-year decline of 14.5 percent.

China was the leading importer of Vietnam’s vegetable and fruit, holding a lion’s share of about 60.8 percent. However, exports of those products to the northern neighbour slipped 29.2 percent in value compared to the same period last year, reported VNA.

Meanwhile, exports to most other markets increased. Earnings from Thailand topped 57.8 million USD in the period, surging 244.1 percent, and from the Republic of Korea - 54.6 million USD, up 25.4 percent.

Shipments to Japan and the Netherlands picked up 26.4 percent and 28.3 percent to 46.2 million USD and 28 million USD, respectively.

Online trading floor boosts lychee consumption

The launch of an online trading floor for lychee products from Bac Giang province will offer a pathway for other Vietnamese agricultural products to make inroads into foreign markets in the future, according to trade officials.

At present, Bac Giang lychees have successfully been able to penetrate a number of demanding markets globally, with the brand name being protected in eight countries.

To maintain the brand and ensure food safety and traceability, the province has directed maintaining an area of 28,000 hectares of lychee. In 2020, the estimated lychee output is estimated at 160,000 tonnes.

Regarding lychee sale, the province has focused on both domestic and export markets and paid attention to opening new and potential markets with high economic efficiency. In order to create favorable conditions for foreign traders, the provincial People's Committee has contacted ministries, central agencies and localities to soon carry out immigration procedures at border gates and organize quarantine locations according to regulations.

The province is aiming for a positive scenario: about 80,000 tonnes of lychee are exported, accounting for 50 percent of the output, while the rest are processed and consumed in the domestic market.

According to the national steering committee for COVID-19 prevention and control, Vietnam enters 2 months without community transmission of COVID-19 as of 7am June 15th, 2020.

So far, 334 infections have been reported in the country, including 194 imported cases which were quarantined upon their arrival.

As many as 323 patients, or 96.7 percent of the total, have recovered from the disease, and there are no deaths.

Among the remaining 11 still under treatment, one has tested negative for SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, once and three at least twice./.
