Vietnam wins four medals at Int’l Informatics Olympiad

Four Vietnamese students have won four medals at the 34th International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI 2022) hosted by Indonesia.

According to Vietnam News Agency, Tran Xuan Bach, a 11th grader at the HUS High School for Gifted Students, Vietnam National University, won a gold medal at the competition.

The three silver medalists are all 12th grade students, including Duong Minh Khoi also from HUS High School for Gifted Students, Le Huu Nghia from Binh Long High School for Gifted Students in Binh Phuoc, and Truong Van Quoc Bao from Nghe An’s Phan Boi Chau High School for Gifted Students.

The IOI 2022 was held both in-person and virtually from August 7 – 14. The Vietnamese contestants took part in the competition remotely from Vietnam.

This year, it gathered 349 contestants from 89 countries and territories. It presented 30 gold, 58 silver and 88 bronze medals.

With a gold and three silvers, Vietnam ranked ninth in the medal table, after China, Japan, the US, the Republic of Korea, Iran, Ukraine, Croatia and Taiwan (China).

First Vietnamese victim in Manchester fire identified through fingerprint

Partial human remains recovered from Bismark House Mill in the UK have been identified, through fingerprint analysis, as Nguyen Van Uoc, according to the Vietnamese Embassy in the UK, citing an announcement by Greater Manchester Police (GMP).

Uoc was one of four Vietnamese nationals who were reported missing to the police earlier and may have been inside the mill during a fire on May 7, 2022. The three others are Chu Van Cuong, Nguyen Van Duong, and Le Thanh Nam, said the Vietnam News Agency.

Police are waiting for more DNA test results to identify further victims.

The 31-year-old maintained regular contact with his wife until the date of the fire, at which time he said he was in a mill.       

Teams have been searching the remnants of the mill since demolition workers discovered human remains on Saturday, July 23, 2022.

Detective Superintendent Lewis Hughes, GMP’s Victim Identification lead, said: “On behalf of all involved in Operation Logan, I send condolences to Uoc’s wife and his loved ones.” He said specially-trained officers are in direct contact with them and to ensure they are fully updated and supported.

According to him, enquiries are ongoing to establish why Uoc and other individuals, currently unidentified, were in the mill during the fire. He called on anyone with information which may assist the case’s investigation should contact Greater Manchester Police or Crimestoppers, anonymously.

According to the Vietnamese Embassy in the UK, right after receiving the information from the local police, the Consular Department (under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs) contacted and sent condolences to the victim’s family and guided them through the necessary procedures.

Counsellor and Deputy Ambassador of Vietnam to the UK To Minh Thu said that following the direction of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Consular Department, the Vietnamese Embassy in the UK continues to actively and closely coordinate with relevant authorities in the UK and Vietnam to quickly complete the identification process of other victims, support victims’ families with necessary post-mortem procedures, and at the same time expedite the investigation, and ensure the legitimate rights and interests of Vietnamese citizens.

The Vietnamese Embassy in the UK said that Vietnamese citizens who need assistance or have related information can contact the citizen protection hotline of the Vietnamese Embassy in the UK, phone number +44 7713 181 501.

Vietnam stock market remains attractive to foreign investors

Foreign investors net purchased 14.8 million stocks, worth some 80 billion VND (3,42 million USD) during the week from August 8 – 12, showing that the Vietnamese securities market remained attractive to them.

According to the Vietnam News Agency, the benchmark VN-Index on the Ho Chi Minh Stock Exchange (HOSE) has risen for the fifth week straight on the back of oil, steel and electricity securities, after hitting a bottom of around 1,140 points in early July.

It ended the week at 1,262.33 points, 9.59 points higher than the previous week, gradually approaching the next resistance zone of 1260–1285 points.

On the Hanoi Stock Exchange (HNX), the HNX-Index picked up 3.52 points to settle at 303.42 points on August 12. UPCoM-Index also inched up 1.52 points to 92.84 points.

Vietnamese firm reaches first partnership deal to develop eSports in Cambodia

Viettel Cambodia (Metfone) and Mineski Global signed a cooperation agreement on organising e-Sport events in the neighbouring country.

The signing of this cooperation agreement held on August 12 is the first and largest cooperation ever in Cambodia in terms of business but also promotes the development of eSports in Cambodia and gradually professionalising the eSports industry in Cambodia.

ESport, which has become popular globally, has been a sports at the Southeast Asian Games recently, reported the Vietnam News Agency.

However, it is still new in Cambodia. Professional tournaments have gradually appeared and created a certain resonance, with a large number of existing players, accounting for more than 80 percent of GenZ.

International Olympic Committee 2017 also acknowledged the presence of eSports and concluded that video games can be considered as sports activities when players are trained and prepared with as much intensity as traditional athletes.

Meanwhile, Metfone has millions of players. Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, which accounts for a 90% market share in Cambodia, with hundreds of thousands of daily players on the Metfone network.
