Vietnamese banh mi named in top 24 best sandwiches globally

The nation’s popular banh mi has been named in the list of the top 24 best sandwiches from across the world by multinational news channel and website CNN, reported the Voice of Vietnam.

According to the prestigious media outlet, the classic version of the banh mi is pork-based, featuring cha lua (Vietnamese-style pork roll), shredded pickled carrots, pickled daikon, cilantro leaves, mayonnaise, and other ingredients.

It noted that visitors can discover plenty of different variations with tofu and thinly sliced lemongrass chicken.

“The taste is crunchy, fresh, savory and utterly delicious,” says CNN.

The website shared that banh mi are typically sold from food carts and can be found on nearly every street corner of Ho Chi Minh City, as well as across Vietnam as a whole, with the delicacy being widely loved well beyond the country’s borders.

CNN’s list also included torta ahogada of Mexico, tramezzino of Italy, shawarma of the Middle East, pambazo of Mexico, muffaletta from the American city of New Orleans, chivito of Uruguay, pan bagnat of France, smørrebrød of Denmark, spatlo of South Africa, Montreal smoked meat sandwich of Canada, and Po’boy of New Orleans.

Banh mi represents a symbol of Vietnamese cuisine which has built up quite a reputation globally.

This can be seen as TasteAtlas, a website dedicated to discovering fresh ingredients, traditional dishes, and authentic restaurants around the world, also named banh mi among the world’s top 50 best street foods, while Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post listed it as one of the best Asian breakfasts.

Vietnam features 10 best countries to visit in East Asia

Vietnam has been named among the 10 best countries to visit in East Asia, as compiled by Canadian magazine The Travel. 

The country boasts a reputation for being one of the world's calmest nations, the article states.

According to the Voice of Vietnam, notwithstanding the country's war wounds, Vietnam thrives due to its youthful vitality, whilst its array of paddy fields and floating marketplaces only add to its attraction to international guests.

According to The Travel, stunning natural beauty and a deep history, along with numerous historical monuments and a vibrant culture, contribute to making this country one of the best throughout all of Southeast Asia.

Hanoi's Pho noodles, the karst islands of Ha Long Bay, the caves of Phong Nha, and the Mekong River are just a few of Vietnam's many tourist attractions which are not to be missed out on, it added.

Vietnam ranked fifth on the list, while Japan and Indonesia were placed first and second, respectively.

The top five places in East Asia also included Thailand and Laos.

The other countries to make up the list includes the Republic of Korea, the Philippines, Singapore, China, and Taiwan (China).

Fireworks festival elevates Da Nang tourism to new height

More investment is needed to upscale the Da Nang International Fireworks Festival (DIFF) to a prominent event of the central city, helping to elevate the central beach city’s tourism and turn it into a leading event and festival destination in Asia, Vietnam News Agency reported travel agencies in the city.

The DIFF - an iconic tourism product of the city, will return for its 11th edition on June 2 after a two-year hiatus due to COVID-19, with eight participating teams from Vietnam, Australia, Canada, Finland, the UK, Italy, Poland and France.

Themed “The gioi khong khoang cach” (World without borders), the event is expected to present eye-pleasing performances while celebrating the strong recovery of the world’s tourism after the pandemic.

Cao Tri Dung, Chairman of the municipal Tourism Association said that the DIFF has become a magnet to both home and foreign visitors. He proposed that the city and the DIFF organiser ask the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism make a list of national tourism events, including the DIFF, on fixed dates, in order to create favourable condition for tourists to make plans for travel.

Dung also opined that Da Nang develop an "ecology" for DIFF, with quality services for visitors, so as to encourage them to spend more and stay longer, and build a strategy to build the festival's brand in association with the Da Nang trademark as Asia’s Leading Festival & Event Destination. 

According to him, the DIFF has helped the city win recognition as Asia’s Leading Festival & Event Destination in 2016 and 2022 by the World Travel Awards.

In 2019, the city welcome nearly 8.7 million visitors, of whom more than 3.5 million were international arrivals, and earnings from tourism reached about 31 trillion VND (1.3 billion USD). Da Nang has become a new tourism hub of Vietnam, contributing 20% of the total number of foreign tourists coming to the country.

To kick start off a busy tourism season, the city has announced the “Enjoy Da Nang” 2023 tourism promotion programme with various and diverse activities such as the DIFF from June 2 to July 8, IRONMAN 70.3 Vietnam competition, SPRINT and IRONKIDS; the Asia- Da Nang film festival, a golf tourism festival, among others.

Director of the municipal Tourism Department Truong Thi Hong Hanh revealed that with support of relevant agencies and warm response from local and foreign tourism service providers, new and high quality tourism products will be introduced continuously to serve demand of holidaymakers./.
