Nguyen Thien Nhan, Politburo member and Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh city Party Committee, has confirmed that the Vietnam and Sri Lanka relationship has been increased in some areas, including tourism; however, there remains much potential for cooperation between the two sides.

He made the statement during his reception for Mr. Sampath Prasanna Walpita Gamage, new Sri Lanka Ambassador to Vietnam, on March 10th.
During the reception, Mr. Nhan showed his pleasure with the close relationship between the two countries, noting that this year they will celebrate the 50th year of diplomatic ties.
He urged the Sri Lanka ambassador to carry out diverse activities to boost bilateral cooperative relationship, and issue initiatives in celebrating the 50th diplomatic anniversary.
Agreeing with Sri Lanka in holding some events in Ho Chi Minh city promoting bilateral cooperation in September, Mr. Nhan said that the two sides can consider the development of sea links, thus further enhancing exchanges and cooperation.
Mr. Sampath Prasanna Walpita Gamage sent his best congratulations on the 90th birthday of the Communist Party of Vietnam, and spoke highly of Vietnam as ASEAN Chair in 2020 and as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council term 2020-2021.
According to the Sri Lanka ambassador, Sri Lanka businesses expect to expand operation in Vietnam. In tourism, some 70,000 Sri Lanka tourists came to Vietnam in 2019, while the two-way trade turnover reached USD200 million in the same year.
Asserting with Mr. Nhan that he would make efforts in promoting cooperative relationship between the two sides as an ambassador, he discussed ways and put forth proposals to increase cooperation in traffic, agriculture, trade and culture./.
