Ho Chi Minh City and Sweden strengthen cooperation in green industry

On September 9 (local time), a delegation from the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Council, led by Nguyen Thi Le, Deputy Secretary of the City Party Committee and Chairwoman of the People’s Council, visited and worked in Sweden.

During the visit, the delegation paid a courtesy call to the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and held meetings at Syre Company.

At the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Deputy Minister for International Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade Hakan Jevrell welcomed the delegation, stating that Vietnam is an important partner for Sweden in the Asia region. He expressed Sweden's desire to further promote bilateral relations and emphasized that Sweden is always ready to support Vietnam, especially Ho Chi Minh City, in sustainable development across key sectors. He also assured that Sweden would facilitate and connect Swedish businesses to explore and engage with the Ho Chi Minh City market.

In response, Nguyen Thi Le expressed her hope that the visit would help nurture and strengthen the traditional friendship between the two countries. She highlighted the significance of 2024 as an important year for Vietnam and Sweden, marking the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations (1969-2024). The Chairwoman emphasized that the relationship between the two countries has grown increasingly practical, with cooperation expanding across various sectors, particularly in the positive development of ties between Ho Chi Minh City and Sweden.

She acknowledged the potential for further development in the relationship between Ho Chi Minh City and Sweden and affirmed that the city would continue to enhance cooperation with the Nordic country and other advanced economies with modern technology. She also expressed her desire to promote delegation exchanges and share experiences in areas of mutual interest, such as high-tech industries, high-tech agriculture, renewable energy, digital transformation and human resource training.

Based on the exchanges and commitments made during the visit, Ho Chi Minh City is eager to explore opportunities for technical cooperation and knowledge-sharing programs with Sweden’s environmental protection agencies. She affirmed that the city has been creating favorable conditions for businesses to invest in the city's priority areas, which also align with Sweden’s strengths, such as science and technology, sustainable industry and environmental technology.

Earlier, the delegation visited and worked with Syre Company, a large-scale high-tech textile recycling company. Stina Billinger, a representative of Syre, shared that the company is studying the possibility of investing USD500-700 million to build a polyester recycling plant in Vietnam, with a focus on exploring investment opportunities in Ho Chi Minh City./.
