Strengthening cooperation in electricity development in Laos

The electricity cooperation contracts signed between Vietnam and Laos mark a significant step forward in the growing friendship and solidarity between the two countries, which is increasingly deep, practical and effective, especially in the energy sector.

In the field of energy cooperation between Vietnam and Laos over the past time, the leaders of the two countries have signed a number of agreements such as a Memorandum of Understanding between the two Governments on cooperation in investment in hydropower projects in Laos, connecting the power grid and importing electricity from Laos; and the agreement between the two Governments in 2019 on cooperation in the development of mine and electric power works.

Accordingly, the Lao Government creates favorable conditions for enterprises to participate in, invest in and develop hydropower projects in the form of Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT). Up to now, there have been many hydropower plants invested by Vietnamese and Lao investors, including Xekaman 1 hydroelectricity (290 MW) and Xekaman Sanxay (36 MW) invested by Vietnam-Laos Power Company, and the Nam Sam Hydropower Complex (265 MW) and Nam Mo Hydropower Complex (505 MW) invested by Phongsupthavy Group.

It is expected that within the framework of the official friendship visit to Vietnam by Lao Party General Secretary and State President Thongloun Sisoulith from June 28-29, the Electricity of Vietnam and the investors of hydropower plants in Laos will sign a series of cooperation agreements, including the Nam Neun 1 hydropower plant (124 MW), Nam Mo 2 hydropower plant (120 MW), Nam Yeuang hydropower plant cluster (84 MW), Nam Tai hydropower plant (21 MW) and Nam Sak (18 MW)./.
