According to Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Dang Hoang Giang, Chairman of the Vietnam UNESCO National Committee, this is the fifth time Vietnam was elected a member of the Executive Council of UNESCO. The previous four times took place in the years 1978-1983, 2001-2005, 2009-2013 and 2015-2019. “It is good news for multilateral diplomacy,” he said.

He added that Vietnam’s membership on the UNESCO Executive Board reflected the accurate policy of the Party and State in increasing international integration. Moreover, it also demonstrated the country's increasing position and prestige in the international arena; and the recognition of the international community for Vietnam's contributions in its relationship with UNESCO.

UNESCO is one of the important specialized agencies of the United Nations, in charge of cooperation in education, science, culture and information-communications.

These are all fundamental fields associated with national development and contribute to peacekeeping in the region and the world.

The UNESCO Executive Board consists of 58 member states with a four-year term of office. It ensures the overall management of UNESCO, prepares the work of the General Conference and sees that its decisions are properly carried out.

Vietnam’s membership in the UNESCO Executive Board offers good opportunities for Vietnam to show ‘dual responsibility’ in protecting national interests, and capitalising on UNESCO’s ideas and initiatives to serve the national construction and development in a sustainable, concerted and comprehensive manner.

At the same time, Vietnam will have chances to contribute to international issues that UNESCO is paying attention to./.
