300 year-old silk village in middle of Hoi An ancient town

A 300 year-old silk village is being restored in an ancient atmosphere in Hoi An ancient city, Quang Nam province which is open free for domestic and foreign visitors.

Duy Xuyen silk village is being revived at No. 28 Nguyen Tat Thanh Street, Hoi An City to introduce to tourists the image of a large trading port over 300 years ago that made great contributions establishing Vietnam’s silk road at sea. |

Although silk making is very famous, it has undergone ups and downs. In some periods, the silk village was forgotten because of a shortage of materials, products not being sold, and periods of low income. However, nowadays when it is combined with tourism, devoted artisans hope to redevelop the famous silk village. |

The material for silk is very special. Mulberry leaves that are found on the high mountains of Quang Nam are brought to plant in gardens becoming food for silkworms. |

When spinning the cocoon, the water temperature is kept at 80 degree Celsius so that the silkworm spits the cocoon evenly and smoothly. |

There are currently 10 artisans who both weave silk and introduce tourists to the production process of silk, especially the particular characteristics about the materials only seen in Hoi An City. |

The weaving of silk from ancient looms collected from localities make smooth silk. |

The silk village often welcomes foreign visitors who are eager to experience silk making with artisans. |

Artisans also make embroidering products for visitors. |

A traditional house exhibiting 100 costumes from 54 Vietnamese groups. The house is being expanded to make a home-stay model for tourists to help them witness with their own eyes the making of silk. |
