After 7 years of construction and 11 years after its approval, the Son La hydroelectric power plant, the largest of its kind in Southeast Asia, will be inaugurated on December 23rd.
The more than VND60 trillion project has been completed thanks to the work of tens of thousands of cadres, experts, engineers and workers.
The plant, which got off the ground in December 2006, has six turbines with a total design capacity of 2,400MW. According to plan, all six turbines will generate approximately 10.2 billion kWh of power per year.

Approved by the National Assembly in 2001 and officially opened construction in 2005, the Son La hydroelectric plant, the largest such facility in Southeast Asia, after seven years and three years ahead of target, is expected to be inaugurated and begin full operation, contributing power to the national grid |

The six turbines of Son La hydro-electric power have generated power in turn from December 17, 2010. The sixth turbine has generated power since September 26, 2012. Each turbine is assembled or repaired at the outermost circle before being moved into its operating position |
|
Engineers follow the turbine operations through computers. According to Mr. Nguyen Hong Ha, the director of the project’s management board, the generation of power two years ahead of the target has saved about USD$ 1 billion |
|
To implement the factory, nearly 18,000 local households in 168 villages in 16 communes of three districts: Muong La, Thuan Chau and Quynh Nhai in Son La province, have been relocated to reserve land for the plant’s reservoir and facilities. Up to November, 2012,the money paid for relocation compensation is over VND3 billion |
