US bombing victims in 1972 commemorated

On December 26, a ceremony to commemorate the victims of US bombings in December 1972 during the war was solemnly held by the Municipal Party Committee at Kham Thien Memorial Site in Dong Da district, Hanoi.

Member of the Politburo and Secretary of the Hanoi Municipal Party Committee Pham Quang Nghi; Vice Chairwoman of the National Assembly Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan; Deputy Prime Minister and member of the Party Central Committee Nguyen Thien Nhan and other leaders of Hanoi City, Air Defence and Air Force Service and people attended the ceremony.

On the night of December 26, 1972, Hanoi’s densely populated residential areas, including Kham Thien street, were relentlessly attacked by a large number of US B52 aircraft. 278 people, including 91 women, 40 elderly and 55 children were killed, and 178 children became orphans during the air raid.

In an emotional atmosphere, the Central and Hanoi leadership, deputies of committees, branches and people held a minute of silence at the memorial site for victims.

Addressing the ceremony, Secretary of the Hanoi Municipal Party Committee Pham Quang Nghi said the historical victory of the “Hanoi – Dien Bien Phu battle in the air” stands out as an immortal heroic epic in the national foundation and defence struggles.

Also on December 26, many people’s organizations in Hanoi went to burn incense and lay wreaths for the victims.
