Party General Secretary visits London

On January 23, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong went to London and paid an official visit to the United Kingdom (UK) capital at the invitation of the Prime Minister David Cameron.
This was the first ever official visit of the General Secretary to the UK and marks the 40th anniversary of the establishment of Vietnam – UK diplomatic relations, the 20th anniversary of both the British Council’s and the Department for International Development’s operations in Vietnam, and the 3rd anniversary of the establishment of the Strategic Partnership between Vietnam and the UK. This visit also coincides with the 100th anniversary of President Ho Chi Minh’s first arrival in the UK in 1913.
Two leaders of Vietnam and Britain pledged to raise bilateral trade to 4 billion USD and British investment in Vietnam to 3 billion USD this year. They agreed to focus on key areas such as assisting Vietnam achieve its Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and cope with climate change..
On this occasion, the two countries signed a memorandum of understanding on exchange of immigration information between the Ministry of Public Security of Vietnam and the UK Border Agency, English-UK 2013 action plan, the agreement between the two Ministries of Defence on the establishment of a bilateral working group, the memorandum of understanding on the establishment of the Vietnam-UK University in Da Nang.
