Shell-fish catching on Tra River bottom

In five to six hours of work catching shell-fish, people in Co Luy-Vinh Tho village, Nghia Phu commune, Tu Nghia district of the central province of Quang Ngai can earn VND200,000-300,000. Thanks to the high income, their traditional industry of shell-fish catching has been maintained, bringing the specialty to different parts of the country.

Each day, hundreds of people in the village take boats to Tra Khuc River, near the sea gate, to catch shell-fish. Harvesting season is from May to August each year. |

According to the tides, people wake up very early in the morning to catch shell-fish. In recent years, the specialty has been favoured. Therefore, people’s living standard has been improved along with a remarkable reduction in poverty rate. On average, each person can earn VND200,000-300,000. |

The tool to catch shell-fish weighs over 10 kilograms, including a 2.5 metre long bamboo handle and a 1 metre long barrel of bamboo to dredge shell-fish. |

Spending 40 years in the industry, Vo Tan, 59 years old, said that despite the hard work, the industry brings stable and high income, especially during the lunar Tet holiday, as the price of shell-fish spikes. |

People in Quang Ngai province consider the taste of shell-fish a traditional one, which is delicious and full of nutrition. Early this year, it was named one of four specialties of Quang Ngai in the list of Vietnamese famous specialites, of which goby and shell-fish from Tra River were among 50 famous specialities of Vietnam. |
