Unique monkey island in Nha Trang city

Over one thousand monkeys that are leading semi-wild lives on Hon Lao Island, 15 kilometres from Nha Trang city, giving the island its unofficial name of monkey island. This is the largest number of monkeys in one place in Vietnam.

A manager on the island, Vo Duc Tuan, said that since 1983 Vietnam worked with the Soviet Union to raise monkeys on Hon Lao island for purposes of scientific study.

In 1991, the group of over 200 monkeys were transferred to the management of Khanh Hoa province.

After that the island became a tourism site and so far the number of monkeys have been increased to over 1,000.

Hon Lao Island, with an area of 35 hectares, is divided into two sections, one for tourism and the other being forests where the monkeys live in.

Monkeys often come to the tourism site to find food.

Playing with the monkeys is a fascinating experience for tourists.
