Conquering nine difficult mountain passes in northern mountain region

Ma Pi Leng in Ha Giang province, O Quy Ho in Lao Cai province, Ma Phuc in Cao Bang province and Khau Pha in Yen Bai province are legendary mountain passes for backpackers because of their spectacular scenery when mist spreads over deep chasms.

O Quy Ho mountain pass in Lao Cai province


The mountain pass is also called Hoang Lien Son, which links Lao Cai province and Lai Chau province with a record length of more than 40km. It is also known as May (Cloud) mountain pass because it is covered by cloud all year round. O Quy Ho mountain pass runs around the Hoang Lien Son mountain range, with the highest peak of the Indochina, Fansipan. The previous mountain pass, when the road has not been built, was full of obstacles, few people dared to cross it because it is too long, with a lot of anecdotal stories making passers-by shudder.

Xa Tong mountain pass in Dien Bien province


Xa Tong mountain pass is located in a dangerous position from Tuan Giao district to Muong Lay district, Dien Bien province. The 25km mountain pass has no marker and convex spherical mirror in some stretches of the mountain pass. The mountain pass is desolate because there is no houses around it. The mountain pass has now been repaired for being easy to go. The sunset on the mountain pass is very beautiful, but also dangerous because it become dark very quickly but the road ahead is still very long.

Bac Sum mountain pass in Ha Giang province


Located between Ha Giang city and Quan Ba district, Bac Sum mountain pass curve as stacked curls of fabric. From Ha Giang city to the 4D road, you will meet sudden narrow-road, which is tortuous around the foot of mountain and it is also the starting point of the journey to discorver the interesting stone plateau.


Ma Phuc mountain pass in Cao Bang province


It is named Ma Phuc because the sides of the highway have two blocks of limestone, which is steep and huddle together as two horses lying prostrately. The mountain pass is 620 m height and to go to the top of the mountain pass, it must overcome seven rounds of slopes.

Pha Din mountain pass in Dien Bien province


Pha Din mountain pass means that the Heaven and the Earth lie between Son La province and Dien Bien province. The mountain pass is famous for its beauty and danger. The mountain pass has sharp bends along 32km in length. In the foot of the mountain pass has several mountain villages and has no mountain village on the area surrounding the top of the mountain pass, which is only the blue sky and deep jungle, which is majestic.

Pha Long mountain pass in Lao Cai province

 


It is so called because the top of the mountain pass runs through Pha Long kermis, which is a small commune in Muong Khuong district, Lao Cai province. To come to the mountain pass, it must go through a dangerous pathway from Can Cau commune, Si Ma Cai district. The pathway is high and dangerous with disordered ripraps, running up the Chay river with 20km in length.

Khau Pha mountain pass in Yen Bai province


 

Khau Pha means the horn of the Heaven and it is the longest mountain pass in the national road No.32 from Tu Le to Mu Cang Chai. The mountain pass is 30km long with bumpy cobbles but no barricades or warning sign. On cloudy days, mountain pass is particularly dangerous because it is easy to be eroded due to basalt red soil and weak land system. The harvest in September and October, going through Khau Pha to enjoy the great beauty of the ripen rice on terraced fields.

Thung Khe mountain pass in Hoa Binh province

 


Thung Khe mountain pass or White Stone mountain pass lies between Cao Phong district and Mai Chau district of Hoa Binh province on the national road No. 6. The mountain pass goes through the steep cliffs. It is not too long and too steep but famous for dangerous. Early morning in Thung Khe is the clear sky, the blue sky and baking sun at noon, the afternoon is soften with late afternoon sun and the mist over everywhere in the evening.

Ma Pi Leng mountain pass in Ha Giang province


Ma Pi Leng meaning bridge of horse’s nose, connects Meo Vac district and Dong Van district, which are the two most remote communes of Ha Giang province. The mountain pass was built since the 1960s by H’mong workers. The mountain pass is about 20km long, it is precarious among inmumerable classes of rocks and mountain./.
