On December 6th, thousands of people joined the national volunteer day held in Hanoi, with some 3,000 donating blood for medical treatment during the Christmas and solar New Year.

The event aimed to mark 15 years of voluntary movement and honour the contributions of volunteers to the community. |

Statistics by the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion (NIHBT) show that over 70% of blood donors are students and pupils, leading a shortage of blood during summer and lunar New Year when the students and pupils are on their holidays. In 2013, the country received 909,000 units of bloods with over 95% of which coming from volunteers. |

The blood is tested and preserved at the NIHBT before being used in surgeries, first-aid or treat anemic diseases. |
Young people were eager to draw pink hearts on their faces, the typical image of the noble blood donation. |
Many outstanding voluntary stories at communities were told during the day. |
Outstanding collectives and individuals who gained excellent voluntary achievements were honoured. |
Representatives from domestic and foreign voluntary organizations set free doves to pray for peace. This year, the United Nations chooses the theme “People's participation” to “Make change happen” for the International Volunteer Day. |
Recreation activities were also held for young people. |
