In April, loa ken (madonna lily) flowers are in blossom, marking a new season.
In Hanoi, these flowers are planted mainly in Tay Tuu ward, Bac Tu Liem district and Quang Ba ward, Tay Ho district. In the picture is Do Dac Tuong’s flower garden planted in Tay Tuu ward.
According to Tuong, the cold spell early this year made the flowers blossom nearly 20 days later than usual.
After cutting the flowers for sale, Mr. Tuong will leave the tubers underground until they are dug out in July and re-planted for the next season one month later.
Thousands of sprigs of flowers are cut every day.
Vietnamese originated varieties are smaller but more aromatic than cross-bred flowers.
The flowers are dipped in water before being transported.
These flowers bring the greatest amount of income for Mr. Tuong’s family, at about VND70-80 million each season.
Flowers are taken to market....... before being sold on the streets in Hanoi.
